New York fashion week is in full swing, and while it’s tempting to review the big players like Victoria Beckham, DKNY, Alexander Wang and Tommy Hilfiger, I prefer my designers a little more alternative. That’s not to say that I haven’t been watching the prestigious labels with interest. Peter Copping’s first outing as Oscar de la Renta’s successor, after the designer’s death in October, has piqued my interest. But more of that tomorrow. For the time being I’m focusing on Creatures of the Wind. Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters’ AW15 offering referenced the 20’s, 60’s and 70’s – peak moments of American psychedelic culture. The collection was a mishmash of vintage references, but the overall effect was pleasing – I’m particularly fond of the flowing lamé pieces and the chubby fur coats. The mink sashes with intarsias of stars were an interesting styling choice and one that can be re-appropriated for a quirky, street style look.
