A mood of refined elegance is prevailing this autumn; on the runways ladylike models, reminiscent of Hitchcock muses, sashayed their way down the catwalk. The sound of slim heels click-clicking and the swish-swoosh of full skirts were the soundtrack of the season. Necklines are set to be modestly high, waists are nipped in and well-manicured hands are delicately sheathed in dainty gloves. It’s a classically beautiful look that works for lots of women, however, this time round the Hitchcock heroine has a sting in her tail.
The most elegant clothes of the season are produced in a subversive material – leather. Not just your standard black either –fall’s incarnation of Tippi Hedren comes in a bounty of colours, from ruby red and emerald teal at Prada to delicate grey-lilac at Proenza Schouler. Gucci went down a more dark and murky route, but the reference to Tippi was crystal clear. Jonathan Saunders took the look to a whole new level with patent leather sculpted to the female form.

Make no mistake; this look is not about Miss Whiplash corsets, boots and whips – the Hitchcock heroine has too much finesses for anything so obvious. This look is about refined femininity juxtaposed with the tough, endurance of leather. How like woman herself.

Sexiness is underplayed but still present, seething under a layer of exquisitely cut leather. The conservative finesse of an early 60’s silhouette in conjunction with the leather tailoring creates an intoxicating blend – it’s the archetypal Lady, gone astray. It’s Tippi Hedren, but badass.
