Unbreakable Roses

It’s nearly a year since my Dad died and I’ve been spending a lot of time in the company of my memories. I remember one occasion when I was a teenager and had my heart broken by some silly boy, I came home in floods of tears. Both Mum and Dad tried to comfort me  with the usual spiel about me being too good for an idiot like that. However, I was too deep in sorrow for their words to have the desired effect. The next day I woke with red puffy eyes after sobbing into my pillow all night. I trudged to the kitchen, Dad was waiting there with a cup of tea and a CD; it was the new album by Aretha Franklin.

‘Listen to this love.’

With that he bustled off. The first track was ‘A Rose is still a rose’, a sassy anthem for broken-hearted girls everywhere. One might not expect someone like my Dad to relate to the fierce wisdom of Aretha, but he was a subtle and mercurial man. He had a rather feminist outlook, he loved strong women and encouraged me to be gritty and determined. I listened to ‘A Rose’ on repeat for weeks, it became the my break-up canticle.

I had forgotten all about this chapter of my adolescence until the other day when I stumbled across the track on Spotify. Suddenly I was flooded by a deluge of memories. After I dried my tears I realised I carry Dad’s fortitude with me wherever I go; it’s the same strength that has dragged me through this first difficult year without him. I was listening to this song whilst applying my make-up and I found myself doing a soft, rosy hued look. I know it sounds trite, but doing my make-up is a self soothing activity that makes me feel equipped to handle whatever curve balls life has install for me.

I miss my Dad every day but when a forgotten moment in our history comes to visit, I’m reminded of how lucky I was to have had him in the first place.

Look out for a squirming, reluctant cameo from Cleo the cat. Here’s a list of the products I used.
