Green Glow

I have daily rituals that make me feel more confident. I enjoy the time I set aside for making up my face; it’s a chance for me to gather my thoughts, listen to my favourite music and prepare for the day. In the last few years, drug store make-up has come along leaps and bounds, and you no longer have to spend a fortune to achieve a wide variety of looks. I like to wear a mix of high-end and high-street, but there are certain products that are worth the investment. Charlotte Tilbury’s stuff is brilliant, and I’ve loved pretty much everything I’ve ever bought from her. I particularly love her Eyes to Mesmerise cream eyeshadow in Verushka, which is a warm, sage colour. I’ve been wearing a lot of warm green and gold tones recently, in an effort […]

Strike a Strobe

Make-up trends cyclical, and the looks which are in vogue now will no doubt appear ridiculous in years to come. Kim Kardashian inspired contouring is often copied but seldom mastered. I’ve have had a go at using pale, matt bronzer to add definition to my bone structure, with mixed success. I’ve just about got the hang of it now, but there are some images on my blog that make me cringe. The tell-tale streaks running under my cheek bones and around my temples look grubby, when I was aiming for sculpted. I’ve never attempted the full-on Kardashian, primarily because I don’t like to go that heavy with my base and I think it’s very tricky to get right. To do it properly, you need cream products that are two shades darker than your natural skin tone, and two shades […]

Juicy Orange

Summer seems to have finally its act together and for me, the warmer months are synonymous with orange lipstick. A summer statement lip calls for a fresh, dewy base and light definition around the eyes. I have recently become a fan of Taylor Swift. I know I’m a little late to the party, but I think she’s fabulous. She owns her emotional messiness and expresses herself honestly – my kinda girl. I’ve been listening to ‘Shake it Off’ on repeat. Again, I’m a late adopter but I care not. Smoke Out

As a self confessed beauty junky, I often find myself scanning the web for new products. The latest Naked Palette from Urban Decay is generating online buzz, but why does anyone need another eyeshadow palette, one might ask? The previous Naked offerings were focused on colour stories; the first was bronzy with a touch of blue, the second was made up of cool, taupe tones and the third was full of warm, blush-pink shades. The previous three are useful additions to any beauty kit, although one would probably be enough. However, the Smoky has piqued my interest because it’s devoted to creating a sultry, sexy eye look. Rather than running from lightest to darkest, like the last three,  the colours are ordered with mattes on one end and the shimmers on the opposite. It’s difficult to say without getting a […]

Unbreakable Roses

It’s nearly a year since my Dad died and I’ve been spending a lot of time in the company of my memories. I remember one occasion when I was a teenager and had my heart broken by some silly boy, I came home in floods of tears. Both Mum and Dad tried to comfort me  with the usual spiel about me being too good for an idiot like that. However, I was too deep in sorrow for their words to have the desired effect. The next day I woke with red puffy eyes after sobbing into my pillow all night. I trudged to the kitchen, Dad was waiting there with a cup of tea and a CD; it was the new album by Aretha Franklin. ‘Listen to this love.’ With that he bustled off. The first track was ‘A […]

The Big Smoke

When I become fixated on something I find it hard to shift. For example, my current preoccupation with a 70’s inspired bohemia has set in and I’m unlikely to move onto something else for ages. A soft, free-floating look calls for something tough to ground it. Whether it’s a beaten up leather jacket, a pair of chunky boots or smokey make-up; floral femininity requires edge. This is a fairly classic smokey eye, but instead of starting with eyeshadow I’ve set down the base of the look with black eyeliner worthy of a racoon. It’s easier to create sooty intensity with smudgy eyeliner. As well as a chocolate brown eyeshadow from Charlotte Tilbury’s Sophisticate palette, I’ve used a khaki green shade with flecks of gold that brings out the hazel in my eyes. I think […]

Musical Makeup

When I put my makeup on I always listen to music and end up singing at full belt. It’s a little disconcerting for whoever happens to be in the house – I’m a one-person gospel choir. I love this track by Ray Charles because it reminds me of my best friend. I’ve done a super simple look that only uses four products and is in three simple steps. To make it even more user friendly, I’ve only used . I used Chanel Vitalumière-Aqua which is easy to build a smooth, light coverage. I applied a thin layer and then gone back in around my eyes and nose and used it as a concealer. I lined my lips with Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat in Pink Venus. I love all Charlotte Tilbury products and this lipstick from […]

Silent Movie Makeup

I had rather grand ideas about doing a sage and well informed makeup tutorial. However, when I started talking to my camera I realised that I sounded like a 5-star fool. I’ve created a video that’s more like a slapstick silent movie than a slick and professional tutorial. None the less, I’ve covered my favourite new daytime look for spring, which is a warm and bronzy affair. As you will see, I’m by no means a makeup artist, rather an enthusiastic amateur. I’ve got a lot of small blemishes on my skin which I cover up using a method I learnt from working with makeup artists. I find the best way to do this is to use a light base, in this case I’ve mixed Charlotte Tilbury’s Light Wonder Foundation with Vichy’s Idealia […]

Blood Orange

One of the big beauty trends for spring summer this year is orange lipstick, which I’m somewhat obsessed with. Orange lips were all over the runways; from Prabal Gurung to Dolce and Gabbana, the makeup artists were working an orange lip. I dutifully trundled down to Mac to pick up an orange shade but proper orange shades, such as Morange or Saigon Summer, make me look jaundiced. Instead I plumped for So Chaud, which is more of a tomato orange. The pictures, however, have come out looking very red indeed so it rather renders this post null and void. I promise that, in the flesh, this is more of an orange shade but I think it’s important to modify trends so that they work for you anyway. There’s no point in wearing something […]

Beware of the Idiot

I’ve met some quite extraordinary people in my life, many of whom I’m fortunate enough to call my friends. However, I’ve come across some hilarious dullards as well – I’m just as grateful for the morons as I am for the geniuses because they’ve provided excellent examples of how not to do things. As I’ve progressed through my career I’ve noticed a trend for female entrepreneurs who add an element spiritual mysticism to the wares they peddle – as well as buying into a product you get to have a good dose of soul medicine as well. I’ve no particular bone to pick with any form of spirituality, however I don’t believe that it’s a commercial commodity that can be bought and sold. I’ve come to realise that anyone who tries to sell […]
