Right now, I’m in the mood for red lipstick; not the bright coral-red I’d wear in the summer, but deep, berry hues that feel right for Autumn. I’ve been wearing a lot of Cruella by Nars and Red Volution by Bourjois. I often fit my outfit around my makeup, which sometimes leaves me over made-up and over dressed. I find applying makeup therapeutic but I sometimes get a little carried away, resulting in me showing up late with a full face, when a little tinted moisturiser and a slick of mascara will do. This dress from Zara seemed to compliment the lipstick, I’ve worn it with a pair of boots I bought last year from Kurt Geiger (similar here).
I’ve always been fond of winter florals, especially when combined with delicate pastels and a lilac lip. I know that purple shades are technically not the most flattering, but I’m rather taken with this pretty lipstick from Topshop. It looks more mauve in the pictures, but in the flesh it’s a colour of a dainty lilac petal. I’ve been trying to buy less and wear more of the clothes that are already in my wardrobe. I bought this shirt dress from ASOS last year, and the skirt is an old favourite by Cédric Charlier. The boots are a well loved pair from Topshop. I picked up this Holly Fulton furry clutch bag in a sample sale, it reminds me of a bejewelled muppets monster, which makes me smile whenever I take it out with me.
Summer seems to have finally its act together and for me, the warmer months are synonymous with orange lipstick. A summer statement lip calls for a fresh, dewy base and light definition around the eyes. I have recently become a fan of Taylor Swift. I know I’m a little late to the party, but I think she’s fabulous. She owns her emotional messiness and expresses herself honestly – my kinda girl. I’ve been listening to ‘Shake it Off’ on repeat. Again, I’m a late adopter but I care not. Marilyn Monroe has been appointed the new global ambassador for Max Factor. I’m not sure what I think about Marilyn’s posthumous new job – particularly as the brand is taking credit for the iconic Marilyn ‘look’. This is a dubious claim with little corroborative evidence. The credit for Marilyn’s make-up goes partly to her first agent Emmeline Snively, who suggested she dye her hair platinum blonde, her make-up artist of many years, Whitey Snyder, and Norma Jean herself. However, there are some tricks from Marilyn’s classic look that are still relevant today. Whitey Snyder used to pat a little white powder to the centre of her lips to make them look plump and luscious. I’ve utilised Whitey’s secrets and dabbed Ambient Lighting powder to an orange-red lip. I love sharp, winged eyeliner to complete the classic, retro look. […]
There’s something about Autumn that calls for dark lipstick. Merlot and berry shades feel too heavy for summer but the as the nights draw in and halloween being around the corner, it’s the perfect time for gothic lipstick. I personally like a matt finish – I’ve tried glossy berry shades but I’ve always ended up in a sticky mess with it smeared all over my teeth. Those of you who are less accident prone than I am might have more success with a shiny wine-red. The trick to finding the perfect shade is to contrast the colour with your skin tone – I have yellow tones in my skin so I need cooler shades with blue, pinkish undertones. My current shade is Entourage by Lipstick Queen. If your skin is of a cooler tone […]
When I put my makeup on I always listen to music and end up singing at full belt. It’s a little disconcerting for whoever happens to be in the house – I’m a one-person gospel choir. I love this track by Ray Charles because it reminds me of my best friend. I’ve done a super simple look that only uses four products and is in three simple steps. To make it even more user friendly, I’ve only used . I used Chanel Vitalumière-Aqua which is easy to build a smooth, light coverage. I applied a thin layer and then gone back in around my eyes and nose and used it as a concealer. I lined my lips with Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat in Pink Venus. I love all Charlotte Tilbury products and this lipstick from […]
There is nothing quite like the delicious schadenfreude of a friend going on holiday to escape England’s blusterous climate, only for the weather to be better here. Ha! This is exactly what happened over the weekend, my friend returned to England from Spain, chillier and wetter than when he went. Indulging in a little spiteful mirth isn’t my prettiest quality, but I’m at peace with my dark side. I think that when character flaws are recognised it makes them easier to manage. Pretending they’re not there makes personality gremlins dangerous, they’re likely to rear their ugly heads at inopportune moments and cause a ruckus. Once seen and saluted, the dark side is easier to control and fence in. I could list all the not-so-nice things about me that I’m ok with, but I’ll save that […]
One of the big beauty trends for spring summer this year is orange lipstick, which I’m somewhat obsessed with. Orange lips were all over the runways; from Prabal Gurung to Dolce and Gabbana, the makeup artists were working an orange lip. I dutifully trundled down to Mac to pick up an orange shade but proper orange shades, such as Morange or Saigon Summer, make me look jaundiced. Instead I plumped for So Chaud, which is more of a tomato orange. The pictures, however, have come out looking very red indeed so it rather renders this post null and void. I promise that, in the flesh, this is more of an orange shade but I think it’s important to modify trends so that they work for you anyway. There’s no point in wearing something […]
