Vegans in Vogue

Vegans have become a hot topic in the last couple of years. The popularity of ‘clean’, plant based food, promoted by the likes of Ella Woodward, and some high profile vegans including Beyoncé, Natalie Portman and Ellie Goulding, has made the vegan lifestyle trendy. The argument for a diet with no animal products is compelling, however when something becomes fashionable, there’s a danger that it will eventually fall out of favour. I’m not a vegan, but I see the validity of the argument. The fashion industry has a lot of answer for in terms of harming the environment and fur was over the AW16 collections. Balenciaga SS15

Alexander Wang’s latest Balenciaga show in Paris was a shift away from the traditional, couture values extolled by Cristòbal Balenciaga himself and a move towards Wang’s sporty, modernist ascetic. The lines were long and lean and mesh fabric spoke of hi-tech sports gear that Alexander Wang often takes inspiration from. The sports-luxe motif moved into softer territory with lovely, ruched cocktail dresses embellished with intricate geometric beading. The diamond shape theme that ran through the various incarnations of mesh was inspired by Cristòbal Balenciaga’s diamond tiled floor in his atelier.  For me, the stars of the show were the floor length duster coats and cropped jackets bedecked with generous collars and strong epaulets.
